BYWAY was established upon the shared histories and experiences of three emerging BIPOC artists living in regional Queensland.

Our mission as culturally and linguistically diverse artists, is to shift the perspective of Australia as one constructed culture and identity.

Working collaboratively within a lens-based practice, our goal is to engage communities and create a platform for highlighting marginalised and under-represented voices.

  • Buzz Gardiner is an Australian-Solomon Island Photographer with a focus on the Arts. Born and raised in Vanuatu – Buzz moved to the Gold Coast 16yrs ago, where he has lived on and off ever since. Buzz’s images explore the experience of Melanesians in the Diaspora and seek to dismantle the perception of Melanesia fostered by decades of foreign ‘representation’ in the visual space. By presenting a more contemporary Islander; the barrier of culture shock is removed, allowing the viewer to see those pictured as individuals, rather than visual aphorisms. Buzz’s work has largely been a personal endeavour and mostly unpresented to this point.

  • Ellamay is an Australian-Thai artist working professionally within the visual arts and creative industries. Offering a female gaze, Ellamay uses her arts practice as a platform to challenge social norms, elevate people from diverse cultural backgrounds and under-represented voices. Ellamay graduated with a Bachelor of Photography from QCA Brisbane, 2014. She has presented works both solo and collaboratively for THE WALLS Art Space, Bleach Festival 2020, Placemakers Gold Coast, Mint Art House, Level Up Gallery, Level One Seventeen Gallery, Running Duck Theatre Company, SUNSTUDIOS Sydney and QCA Brisbane. • Jorge is a Portuguese photographer, videographer and Visual Artist living and working in Australia. As a self-taught artist, curiosity has always led the learning process, turning breakthrough images into technical knowledge, assimilated, ready to be adapted, and built on. This process has spilled into areas beyond photography, videography being a close second and now extending into a broader visual arts practice. Jorge is driven to capture moments and stories that shift perceptions about the mundane and unassuming. From that also derives a pull to intervene and attempt to affect the fabric of the society we live in, through the lens of socially-minded projects. Jorge has a broad and extensive range of experience, as a photographer / videographer / lighting designer / creative director in projects for Museum of Brisbane, Placemakers*, HOTA, Hiromi Tango, The Farm, Horizon Festival, Supercell, Metro Arts, among others. Adding to this, Jorge is also a finalist in the 2021 SEPA, Campbell Art Prize and Australian Photography Awards.
